Generic Marketplace Calculator

This calculator models a marketplace that is not covered by a verified preset. You provide the percentage, fixed charge, and transaction amount the percentage applies to; the engine handles payout and profit math without pretending those inputs are official defaults.

Who it is for: It is for sellers working with a niche platform, negotiated plan, local marketplace, legacy account rate, or fee schedule that differs from the supported presets.

How this calculator works

Marketplace fee equals the user-entered percentage multiplied by the selected basis—item only, item plus buyer shipping, or gross order including tax—plus the user-entered fixed order fee.

  1. Discounted item revenue = selling price − seller-funded discount.
  2. Choose fee basis: item revenue; item revenue + buyer shipping; or item revenue + buyer shipping + buyer sales tax.
  3. Marketplace fees = entered percentage × selected basis + entered fixed fee. Optional creator commission is calculated separately on item revenue.
  4. Payout = seller revenue − fees deducted from proceeds. Profit also subtracts item, shipping, packaging, advertising, and miscellaneous costs.

Worked example

Example: a 10% marketplace plus $0.30

Assume a $50 item, $5 buyer shipping, $4 buyer tax, $20 item cost, $5 actual shipping, a 10% fee on item plus shipping, and a $0.30 fixed charge.

  • Seller revenue is $55.00; the selected fee basis is also $55.00 because tax is excluded.
  • Percentage fee: 10% × $55.00 = $5.50.
  • Add the $0.30 fixed fee for total marketplace fees of $5.80.
  • Estimated payout is $49.20 and operating costs are $25.00.

Estimated profit is $24.20. If the official marketplace schedule instead applies its percentage to tax, choose the gross-order basis and cite that rule in your own records.

Important exceptions

  • The model supports one percentage and one fixed order fee; graduated tiers, minimums, caps, plan subscriptions, and conditional fees require a supported calculator or manual cost entry.
  • A marketplace can treat shipping, tax, discounts, refunds, or payment processing differently from the selected basis.
  • No rate on this page is presented as an official marketplace default.
  • Account-specific charges and negotiated pricing should be confirmed against a current statement or official agreement.

Assumptions used

  • The user has verified the entered fee rate and basis against an official source or marketplace statement.
  • The fixed fee is charged once per order.
  • Buyer tax remains excluded from seller revenue even when the selected percentage basis includes it.
  • All calculations use USD and round displayed fee lines to the nearest cent.

Sources and verification

Marketplace defaults come from the sources below. We do not use blog summaries as fee authority. User-specific or unverifiable charges stay editable.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the generic calculator's fee rate come from?

It comes entirely from the value you enter. The page deliberately has no marketplace default, so verify the percentage, fixed amount, and basis against official documentation.

Which fee basis should I choose?

Choose item only, item plus buyer shipping, or gross order including tax based on the exact wording of the marketplace's official fee policy.

Can this model graduated fee tiers?

Not directly. Use a supported marketplace calculator when available, or calculate the tiered charge externally and add the difference as a miscellaneous cost.

Does the generic calculator send my fee agreement to a server?

No. Inputs and calculations stay in the browser, and share state is stored in the URL fragment, which is not sent with the page request.
